為什麼 mountain 要加 s 變成 mountains？
大自然的山通常不是孤立的一座山，而是連綿起伏的山脈系統。因此，英文習慣用複數的 the mountains 來統稱「山區」、「群山」。

• in the mountains（在山區裡）
  • We camped in the mountains.（我們在群山「之中／山區」露營。）
• on the mountain(沒加s)
  • The chickens live on the mountain.雞住在這座山上
  • 指的是那座特定的「山（表面／山坡上）」。
  • There is a small house on the mountain.（山上有棟小房子。）

hills 山丘

• There are many hills in the UK.在英国有很多山丘。
• We need to walk to the top of that hill.我们需要走到那个山丘顶上。

rivers

river（河流） 加 s 變成 rivers，通常是最直觀的「複數名詞」用法，用來指「多條河流」，或者泛指大自然中的河川。

• There are many rivers in Taiwan. （台灣有許多河流。）
• We love exploring nature, including forests, lakes, and rivers. （我們喜歡探索大自然，包括森林、湖泊和河流。）

講其中某一條特定的河，前面通常會加上定冠詞 the，而且用單數形：

• We went swimming in the river. （我們去那條河游泳了。）

自然景觀複數：

• in the fields（在田野裡）
• rivers（河流們）
• lakes（湖泊們）

in the woods/in a forest 在森林裡

in the water/air/sky

為什麼魚要在 in the water 裡？

因為魚是水生生物，牠們的「家」和生存環境就是大自然中的水體。

• 當我們說 in the water 時，意思是「在水（這個環境、介質）裡面」。
• 就像人類生活在空氣中（in the air），鳥兒飛在天空中（in the sky），魚兒就是生活在水中（in the water）。

the water 水域

前面有the，大自然的事物前面都會有the。 當water指稱河流、湖泊、海洋或大自然中流動、聚集的液體時，它就是「水域、水面」的意思。

• There are many fish in the water.有很多魚在水裡。

by the water（在水邊 / 靠近水的地方）

緊鄰著水體（河、湖、海）旁邊。by 在這裡有「在…旁邊、緊鄰」的意思。

• We love to walk by the water at sunset.（我們很喜歡在日落時分在水邊散步。）
• They built a small cabin by the water.（他們在水邊蓋了一間小木屋。）

near the water（靠近水的地方）

距離水不遠的地方（範圍比 by 稍微寬鬆一點點，不一定緊貼著，但就在附近）。

• It’s nice to live near the water.（住在靠近水的地方很棒。）

💡 比較一下這三種跟 water 結合的感覺：

1. in the water ＝ 泡在水裡、在水面之下（例如：魚、游泳的人）。
2. by the water ＝ 站在水岸邊、緊鄰著水。
3. near the water ＝ 離水不遠的附近區域。
