He (主詞) + was (動詞) + late (形容詞)
be 動詞(is, am, are, was, were)或連綴動詞(look, feel, become)來描述主詞的「狀態」時,形容詞late就會跑到動詞後面。
- The apple is red.(這顆蘋果是紅色的。→ red 在 is 後面)
- He is busy.(他很忙。→ busy 在 is 後面)
- He was late.(他遲到了。
late(形容詞 / 副詞)— 指「遲到、晚的」
- I am late.(我遲到了。)
- This is a late train.(這是一班誤點/開很晚的火車。)
be late by + [時間長度](遲到了多久)
- The bus was ten minutes late.
- The train is late by ten minutes.(火車誤點/遲到了十分鐘。)
- I was late by half an hour.(我遲到了半小時。)
be late for
be late for + [活動/事件/場合/地點]。
- I am late for school.(我上學遲到了。)
- Don’t be late for work.(上班不要遲到。)
- He was late for the flight.(他趕不上班機/搭機遲到了。)
- I am late for work because of the heavy traffic.
- Don’t be late for school tomorrow.
- He was late for the important interview this morning.

- If you are late for the flight, you won’t be able to board.
- He always gets late for dinner reservations.

- Are you going to be late for the party tonight?

- Don’t work too late.(不要工作到太晚。)
- He likes to work late at night.
- He arrived late.(他遲到了/晚到。)
- The train arrived late because of the heavy rain.
名詞片語(副詞) 修飾 late(形容詞)
- 3 years + old(三歲)
- 10 minutes + late(遲到十分鐘)
- 2 meters + tall(高兩公尺)
- He was ten minutes late for the test.
- He is 3 years old.
- old(老/歲)是形容詞。
- He was ten minutes late.
- late(遲到)是形容詞。
- Emma was late because she forgot the time of the test.
later(副詞) 稍後、過了一陣子「之後」
[數字] + [時間單位 (minutes/hours/days...)] + later
- 10 minutes later = 10
- 2 hours later = 2小時後
- 3 days later = 3天後
例句:
- Ten minutes later, he left.(十分鐘後,他離開了。)
-
He left the house, and ten minutes later, it started to rain.(他離開了房子,10分鐘後就開始下雨了。)
in ten minutes10分鐘之後 (與10 minutes later相同意思)- I will be ready in 10 minutes.(我 10分鐘後 就準備好。)
- See you later.(待會見。)
- I will call you later.(我稍後打給你。)
- Do you want to have dinner here now or later?
later(形容詞) 接下來、之後的
-
In later versions of the software…(在該軟體的後續版本中…)
- We can talk about this in a later class.
- Let’s discuss this project at a later date.
- We got back late last night.
- We got back later last night.
- 單獨用(通常跟未來有關) → later = 「等一下、稍後」(例如:I’ll do it later.)
- 放在動作後面(用來比較) → later = 「更晚、比平常晚」(例如:We arrived later than usual.)
副詞 late(遲) vs later(之後)
- He arrived late.
- He arrived later.
