Instructions 指示、說明、教導，有步驟

可數名詞，要加S
核心字根：-struct-（建造、組合、構築)
in-（進入、向內、往上）:在這裡有「往內、給予、灌輸」的意思。
-ion（名詞字尾）:把動詞變成名詞（表示「動作的結果」或「過程」）。

動詞 instruct 除了有「指示、命令」之外，也有「教導、指導」的意思

instructor 就是教練、講師。

它通常是一步一步（step-by-step）的具體指令

  • The first step is to turn on the computer.（第一個步驟是打開電腦。）

Directions（操作指引／步驟說明）

可數名詞，要加S

照著做、怎麼執行的步驟導引（像地圖指引你怎麼走）。

偏向「實作、步驟、怎麼操作」。

最常出現在考卷作答、測驗施測、藥品使用說明或組裝步驟中。

  • Follow the directions on the back of the medicine box. （請依照藥盒背面的服用指示。）
  • Check the directions for administering the test. （請查看該測驗的施測說明/步驟。）

Guidelines 建議

可數名詞，要加S

建議方向、參考

它不會硬性規定你每一個細節怎麼做，而是告訴你「在這個範圍內做事比較好、比較理想」。

常見情境： 公司政策方針、健康飲食建議、社群媒體發文規範、設計排版原則。

  • Here are some guidelines for writing a good resume.（這裡有一些撰寫好履歷的建議。）
  • The company provided new guidelines for working from home. （公司提供了居家辦公的新建議——給大家當作做事的大原則參考。）
  • These are just general guidelines, not strict rules. （這些只是大方向的建議，並不是嚴格的規定。）
  • Handbook: 員工手冊、學生手冊、旅遊指南
  • Setup（設置,動詞）: 它不完全是說明書，而是指「把東西裝好、調整好」的這個過程或整體架構（例如：手機開機的初始設定、軟體安裝）
  • Manual / Instruction book（說明書 / 操作手冊）
    • Manual 最常用來指機器、軟體的完整操作手冊。
    • Instruction book 則比較白話，字面就是「指令書」。

區別

  • Steps = 一步步的動作（Step 1, Step 2）。
  • Directions = 帶有強烈指示性、不能做錯的方向或操作規定（例如藥袋上的用藥指示）。
  • Instructions = 廣泛的說明或操作指南（說明書裡面的內容就叫 instructions）。
  • Guidelines = 柔性的「指導方針／建議原則」（供你參考，不一定要百分之百死板遵守）。
