die(動) 死、死亡

某種生物、植物、或細胞在什麼情況下會死時，這是永恆不變的真理，所以一定要用現在式。

• Plants die without water.（植物沒有水就會死。）
• The fish will die without water.（魚沒有水會死。）
• Brain cells die very quickly without oxygen.（腦細胞沒有氧氣會很快死亡。）

died(動) 去世、過世

通常用在一般過去式（Simple Past），說明某人或某物在過去「過世了、死去了」。

• He died last year.（他去年過世了。）
• My grandfather died ten years ago. （我爺爺在十年前過世了。）
• The plant died because I forgot to water it. （這株植物死掉了，因為我忘記澆水。）

dead(形) 已經死亡的狀態

dead形容詞，前面通常會搭配 be 動詞（is, was, are, were），用來描述人或動物死掉的、無生命的，手機沒電的（形容一種「狀態」）。

• My grandfather has been dead for ten years. （我爺爺已經過世（處於已故狀態）十年了。） (注意：如果像上面這樣用狀態表達「持續多久」，就要用形容詞 dead，不能用動詞 died。)
• He has been dead for a year.（他去世滿一年了。）
• My phone is dead. （我手機死機／沒電了 $\rightarrow$ 生活中超常用來形容沒電！）
• the television has just died 電視機剛剛壞了

dying(進行式/形容詞) 快要死了

字尾ie變ying

• 原形動詞：die
• 如果按照正常規則加 -ing，會變成 dieing。
• 但跟 lie 一樣，英文不允許三個母語字母（i-e-i）黏在一起，所以要把 **-ie 改成 -y**，然後再加 -ing。

dying 進行式 正處於生命快要結束

進行「死」這個動作（現在進行式 / 瀕死狀態），用來形容某人或某物正處於生命快要結束的瞬間。

• The plant is dying because it needs water.（這棵植物快要枯死／死掉了，因為它需要水。）
• He looked like he was dying.（他看起來快死掉了／虛弱極了。）

dying(adj.) 形容「瀕死的人或動物」（垂死的）

• The vet tried to save the dying dog.（獸醫試著拯救那隻垂死（快要死掉）的狗。）
• He visited his dying grandfather at the hospital.（他去醫院探望他生命垂危的爺爺。）

dying(adj.) 形容「快要消失的事物、文化或光線」（微弱的、將熄滅的）

除了生物，dying 也常拿來形容抽象概念或無生命的東西：

• dying tradition（逐漸消失的傳統）
• dying fire（快要熄滅的營火／微弱的火光）
  • They sat by the dying fire.（他們坐在那堆快要熄滅的營火旁。）

death(名詞) 死亡 去世

• The police are investigating the cause of his death.（警方正在調查他死因。）
• The news of her sudden death shocked everyone.（她突然過世的消息震驚了所有人。）

抽象概念

• It marked the death of an era.（這象徵了一個時代的結束。）

• to death（死去活來、死命地 $\rightarrow$ 用來誇飾程度極高）
• I’m bored to death.（我無聊得要死。）
• I’m scared to death.（我嚇死了。）
• I was scared to death when I saw the snake.（我看到那條蛇的時候，嚇得要死。）
