1. 詞性與核心概念
- 詞性：複合介系詞片語（Prepositional phrase）。
- 核心意思：「代替……」、「而不是……」。
- 基本特性：因為它帶有介系詞
of，所以它後面絕對不能直接接「主詞 + 動詞」的完整子句。
2. 後面「一定只能」接什麼？（文法關鍵）
instead of 後面只能接三種東西：
① 名詞或代名詞（Noun / Pronoun）
- I will go instead of him. （我會代替他去。）
- We used paper cups instead of plastic. （我們用紙杯，而不是塑膠杯。）
② 動名詞（V-ing）
如果後面要接「動作」，那個動詞一定要變成 -ing 型態。
- She watched a movie instead of studying. （她看電影，而不是讀書。）
③ 疑問詞引導的名詞子句（少見，但文法上可行）
- You should focus on what to do instead of how to complain. （你應該專注於該做什麼，而不是怎麼抱怨。）
3. 句子位置與用法
instead of 在句子中有兩種主要的位置：
位置 A：放在句尾（補充說明「在什麼情況之外，選擇了別的」）
最常見的自然位置，用來修飾前面整句發生的動作。
- He walked home instead of taking the bus. （他走路回家，而不是搭公車。）
- I ordered tea instead of coffee. （我點了茶，而不是咖啡。）
位置 B：放在句首（強烈對比：「與其 A，不如 B」）
如果想強調強烈的對比或轉折，可以把整個 instead of 片語拉到句首。
- Instead of** complaining, we should take action. （與其**抱怨，我們應該採取行動。）
- Instead of** going out, she stayed home to read. （她沒有出去玩，反而**待在家裡看書。）
💡 複習小叮嚀：它跟 rather than 的差異
instead of＝ 只能接 名詞 或 V-ing。rather than＝ 可以接 名詞、V-ing，還可以接 原形動詞（例如：walk rather than take）。
這兩個在表現在「替代與選擇」時是超級好用的雙胞胎！
第一類：代替某人或某物（置換角色/物品）
這類用來表達「用 A 來取代 B」或「由 A 代替 B 去做」。
- I will attend the meeting instead of my manager. （我將代替我的經理出席這場會議。）
- You can use olive oil instead of butter for this recipe. （這道食譜你可以用橄欖油代替奶油。）
- She ordered tea instead of coffee at the café. （她在咖啡廳點了茶，而不是咖啡 / 用茶代替咖啡。）
- He used his smartphone instead of a camera to take photos. （他用智慧型手機代替相機來拍照。）
第二類：連接兩個「動作（V-ing）」（表達做這件事，而不是那件事）
這是 instead of 非常核心的用法。當它後面接動詞時，**一定要加上 -ing**。
- Let’s walk to the park instead of taking a taxi. （我們走路去公園吧，而不是搭計程車。）
- She decided to write a letter instead of sending an email. （她決定寫信，而不是發電子郵件。）
- He chose to cook dinner at home instead of eating out. （他選擇在家煮晚餐，而不是外食。）
第三類：放在句首或句尾（表達「與其……不如……」或「反而……」）
instead of 也可以放在句首，用來對比兩種狀況；或者放在句尾表示「結果卻……」。
- Instead of complaining, we should try to fix the problem. （與其抱怨，我們應該試著解決問題。）
- Instead of getting angry, she calmly explained her point. （她沒有生氣，反而冷靜地解釋她的觀點。）
- He stayed up late playing games instead of studying for the exam. （他熬夜打電動，而不是準備考試。）
💡 小提醒：instead of vs rather than 的小差別
instead of後面只能接「名詞」或「V-ing」。- 我們前面學過的
rather than還可以接「原形動詞」（例如：walk rather than take）。這是兩者在文法上最明顯的小差異喔！
