Counter vs Front desk

1. Counter（一般櫃檯、收銀檯）

交易、點餐的功能。

  • 餐廳或速食店點餐、取餐的檯子（如：order at the counter）。
  • 商店結帳的收銀檯（checkout counter）。
  • 吧台、藥局拿藥的櫃檯（pharmacy counter）。

例句:

  • Please place your order at the counter.（請在櫃檯點餐。）

2. Front desk（接待櫃檯、前台）

公司、飯店、大樓或學校正門口一進去的「主要接待、登記、問訊處」，負責迎賓、接電話、發放訪客證或處理入住。

例句:

  • If you have any questions, please ask the staff at the front desk.（如果你有任何問題，請詢問接待櫃檯的工作人員。）
  • on the menu（在菜單上——食物被印在菜單的紙面或頁面上）
  • I don’t like buffets so I’ll order something on the menu 我不喜歡自助餐，所以我會點菜單上的東西。

order 點餐

  • They aren’t going to order the pork curry 他們不打算點咖哩豬肉。

buffet 在英文中確實有這兩種主要的含意，而且它們息息相關：

A buffet自助餐（指用餐形式或餐點本身）

  • We had a great buffet at the hotel.（我們在飯店吃了一頓很棒的自助餐。）
  • Let’s go to a buffet.（我們去吃自助餐吧。）
  • This place has a great buffet! 這個地方有一個很棒的自助餐！

另外，它原本的法文字源其實是指一種「長餐具櫃」，所以在家具店裡，那種長型的餐邊櫃有時候也會被叫做 buffet。

all-you-can-eat 無限量供應的自助餐

  • I want to go to an all-you-can-eat.我想去吃吃到飽。

take 人 out 帶某人出去

  • Take out food（不加人）：外帶食物。
  • Take you out（加人）：帶你出去
    • 意思是「帶某人出去（吃飯、約會、玩樂）」，也就是由你來作東、請客或陪伴對方出門社交。
    • We were going to take you out to your favorite restaurant!我們原本打算帶你去你最喜歡的餐廳的！

grilled 烤

  • Would you like grilled mushrooms or a salad?您想要烤蘑菇還是一份沙拉？
  • Was the grilled salmon better than the steak ? 烤三文魚比牛排更好嗎？
  • I’d like grilled seafood for my main course , thanks. 我的主菜想要烤海鮮，謝謝。

the main course 主菜

  • I’d like grilled seafood for my main course , thanks.我的主菜想要烤海鮮，謝謝。

  • The first course is a bowl of mushroom soup. 第一道菜是一碗蘑菇湯。

西餐通常分為：

  • Appetizer / Starter（前菜）
  • main course/ main dish

  • a signature dish（招牌菜）

時間所有格’s special

加所有格的時間只是為了精確指出「這個時間點」的限定菜色喔！

  • Tonight’s special. 今天晚上的特餐
    • （今晚特餐）這是餐廳「今天臨時推出」或「當日限定」的料理。通常不在固定菜單上
  • Today’s lunch special 或 Lunch special.午餐特餐
  • This week’s special. 這個星期的特餐
  • Chef’s special（主廚特餐，不限定特定時間）。
  • Tonight’s special is the grilled salmon. 今晚的特餐是烤三文魚。

The dining hall 大學的學校食堂

所有的 dining hall（學校裡的）基本上都具備 cafeteria 的自助形式，但 dining hall 聽起來更有「整個校園群體共同用餐的大型食堂」的專屬感。

  • Freshmen are required to sign up for a meal plan at the main dining hall. 大一新生必須在主要的大學食堂登記購買餐費方案。
  • The university dining hall was decorated festively for the holiday season. 為了假期季節，大學食堂被裝飾得充滿節慶氣氛。
  • Students gathered in the dining hall to listen to the dean’s announcement. 學生們聚集在學生食堂裡，聆聽院長的佈告宣導。

Cafeteria（自助餐廳／咖啡廳）

不只學校有，醫院、大型辦公大樓、博物館甚至百貨公司裡那種「自己拿餐盤挑選食物、排隊結帳」的自助餐廳都可以叫 cafeteria。

cafeteria 則是一個更通用的詞，只要是走自助取餐風格的平價餐廳，都可以這樣叫。

重點在於「自助式（self-service）」。大家拿著托盤（tray）沿著餐檯選菜，最後到收銀台付錢。

  • Let’s meet at the cafeteria for lunch at noon. 我們中午在員工餐廳吃午餐碰面吧。
  • The line in the school cafeteria is always long during the lunch break. 學校餐廳的隊伍在午休時間總是排得很長。
